Steele Martin Jones began with a simple vision and a big leap of faith. On September 15, 1979, Michael Steele opened the firm in a modest two-room office with his wife, Crystal, by his side as secretary. He was 27 years old, had just one client, and borrowed $5,000 at 21% interest to bridge the gap until tax season. That leap laid the foundation for what would become one of West Tennessee’s leading accounting and advisory firms.

Today, Steele Martin Jones serves nearly 2,000 clients across the United States. We specialize in supporting small- to mid-sized businesses with a full suite of services, including tax preparation, business consulting, accounting, and payroll.

Our team has grown over the decades with the addition of key partners. Gary Martin joined in 1982, followed by Tom Carson Jones in 1994. Both Steele and Martin have since retired, but their legacy of client-focused service lives on.

The firm is now led by partners Tom Jones, Kevin McKenzie, Brandon Clenney, and William Welch. McKenzie, a lifelong resident of Parsons, became partner in 2013. Clenney, originally from Milan, joined the partnership in 2018. Welch, a proud graduate of Jackson Christian School, was named partner in 2024.

We’ve remained deeply committed to the Jackson business community throughout our history. Michael Steele helped establish the Chamber’s Business of the Year awards, and Steele Martin Jones has been honored with three of them: Small Business of the Year, Cornerstone Business of the Year, and the Pinnacle Award.
